Sandy Kavalier Biography

I fell in love with photography 40 years ago during a cross country trip to the Grand Canyon. Creating a final image that accurately represented what I saw was an enormous challenge and loads of fun. I pursued my fascination with photography and the process of developing negatives and darkroom printing at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. I was never without my camera and with the birth of our first child, my interests turned to portraiture.

As a mother of four children, I had plenty of opportunities to practice the art of portraiture. Before long I was taking photographs for friends and then friends of friends. I began my portrait business in 1977 and continue to photograph people of all ages.

In 1999, I converted my traditional darkroom into a digital workspace. The digital era has allowed me to view images with my clients during the photo session, and provided me with the tools to perfect the final image.

When I am not making portraits, I live my life as a voyeur. When lucky enough to secure a composition within that instant where the light is breathtaking, an image is made. If not, it remains in my mental file cabinet of fleeting, incredible images: a memory meant only for me.
